Early Neurological Stimulation (or ENS) is known for helping to enhance the natural abilities of dogs. This process takes place from days 3 to 16 and subjects puppies to mild forms of stimulation which le’ds to stress and has been said to lead to faster maturation and better problem-solving skills in life. ENS derives from our military's well-known program, "Bio Sensor" training and has been applied to other types of working dog programs.
STEPS OF ENS:
1. Tactile Stimulation - the puppy is held in one hand while the handler gently stimulates (tickles) the puppy between it's toes (on one foot). This step generally lasts 3 to 5 seconds.
2. Head Held Erect - while using both hands, the handler will hold the puppy perpendicular to the ground, so its head is above its tail in an upward position. This step generally lasts 3 to 5 seconds.
3. Head Pointed Down - while holding the puppy firmly in both hands, the handler positions the puppy with its head pointed downward towards the ground. This step lasts 3 to 5 seconds.
4. Supine Position - the puppy is held resting on its back in the palm of both the handler's hands. The puppy's muzzle faces up towards the ceiling. This step lasts 3 to 5 seconds.
5. Thermal Stimulation - the handler uses a damp and cooled towel and places the puppy feet down on it. The puppy is not restrained from moving. This step lasts 3 to 5 seconds.
When ENS is performed correctly, it is believed to impact the neurological system by throwing into action earlier than expected. The results, an increased capacity that will later assist in making a difference in the dog's performance.
ENS is time sensitive and MUST be performed from day 3 to day 16 of the puppy's life.
According to "Breeding Better Dogs" there are Five overall benefits to dogs who have been exposed to ENS: (i) improved cardio vascular performance; (ii) stronger heart beats; (iii) stronger adrenal glands; (iv) increased tolerance to stress; and (v) greater resistance to disease.
ENS has also been known to allow for more active and exploratory puppies.
